Bill’s creative power was always at work. While he was painting, he was imagining where he wanted to go with the painting. He was like a chess player, always thinking three or four moves ahead. Bill’s was an imaginative mind, fertile ground for his creative power.

Notice how Bill “pushes” the mountain color into the canvas with his palette knife. Many beginning painters make the mistake of applying too much paint for the mountain layer. Then, when they go to highlight , the paint slips and won’t break properly. If you find that happening, use your palette knife to scrape off some of the paint. Remember, keep that layer very thin.
