“Let it boil up!”

Notice at the :25 second mark how Bill creates the "splashes". He presses the fan brush into the canvas while slightly pushing down on the brush. He then lifts the brush off the canvas. This gets all the paint out of the brush. It creates a heavy amount of paint which allows him to create the "spray" by lightly "flipping" that layer of paint. Doesn't the lake, behind the … [Read more...]

“Make it with spark!”

Bill shows you why he spent so much time adding dark areas to this painting. Notice how the white paint pops off the canvas. So...what is Bill doing here? Isn't he "highlighting" - just like he does with his mountains? Except here he's using his fan brush. Having difficulty highlighting mountains with the palette knife? Try using your fan brush with the same light touch Bill … [Read more...]

So he begins to stroke multiple times to darken the white … [Read more...]

“Fire in more dark – don’t be shy!”

When adding shadows to your painting you can't be afraid of adding too much. You are trying to create an effect and, as we said earlier, create contrast. You'll see how Bill uses this dark area in upcoming clips. It's a similar concept when creating trees or mountains. You need the dark areas so that your highlights will pop and stand out! … [Read more...]

You better have it dark!

Bill wants to make part of his painting darker. Why? What does Bill always say? "Without dark there is no light!" Watch how he applies that concept in this clip! … [Read more...]
