Terror of the Blank Canvas

Bill talks about the “Terror of the Blank Canvas” in many of his videos. He jokes that “That canvas is scared of me.”

What Bill is talking about is the main reason most people don’t become artists. People tell us the number one obstacle holding them back from becoming the artist they want to be is…

Self-Confidence

There are two other obstacles that people mention as well:  time and money.

Let’s be honest, though. Imagine every time you approached the canvas you created a beautiful work of art. Do you think you’d make the time and find the money?

We get it.

The worst art critic

We’ve written many times that artists are their own worst critics. In fact, the last person who should judge your painting is you! You are always going to be harder on yourself than you need to be.

That’s why we have extra eyes in the form of our Master Class mentors who comment on your work. They help you build on your strengths as well as make suggestions on ways to improve.

We, humans, are hardwired to see the lions lurking in the bush. That’s how we’ve survived for so long.

A cycle

Well, the solution is quite simple. Start with learning from a professional. Practice the skills they teach you. Then you’ll own their techniques. With your newfound abilities, you have the confidence to start the cycle all over again.

Many people learn the wrong lessons from the wrong teachers. They practice poor skills. They never become competent let alone master the skills. Their confidence wanes, and they stop learning — they give up.

It looks easy

Bill makes painting look easy. Remember, though; he spent forty years BEFORE he became a television celebrity. Then he spent another twenty years perfecting his craft.

We’re not going to kid you. Learning to paint like a master is tough. But as we’ve said over, and over…it is not rocket science!

A rare bird

You must learn from a master artist and a master teacher. Trust us, those birds are rare!

You must practice the lessons they teach you.

Your new skills will give you the confidence to continue your learning. Each day will be a new adventure in learning.

Then, and only then, will the canvas be afraid of you!
