Daily Tips Day 364 Bill

Bill creates perspective by adding dark in the foreground.

In this video, Bill adds dark to the foreground which creates distance and perspective. He started by creating the mountains with a very light (distance) color. As he moved closer he darkened the value. This is because our eyes can’t see vivid colors in the distance. We can see blues and violets.
Everything in the foreground should be colorful.

Bill also gives us a great lesson on wet-on-wet painting today. Notice when he uses thick paint, and when he thins it down.

Points To Consider:

  • His base paint is dark and thick
  • Bill knew he would be adding dark thick paint in front so he left the canvas bare. Remember it does have Magic White on it but it has been sitting for a while so the paint is a little tacky. The texture of the canvas grabs the thick paint.
  • Because light on light is nothing, he leaves a dark line to separate the foreground area from the background.
  • As Bill highlights he allows the dark base to show through.
  • The highlighting color is thinned with Magic White. This allows the paint to pull off of the brush onto the thick paint.
  • Notice when Bill adds the bright grassy area, he starts at the top where he wants it to be the brightest and then taps the lower part to push the color down. This creates different values which give the illusion of dimension.
  • The firm bristles on the Alexander Fan Brush work perfectly to create the grasses that are standing up.

Happy Painting!
