Notice how much paint Bill is using to construct his flower. He’s got a lot of paint on the palette knife for each of his flower strokes. Bill created a pretty thick layer of paint for his background (you can see the thick paint in the close-up shots). So he’s continuing to layer on thick layers of paint. Bill is creating a three-dimensional effect while painting this flower.
