The Leader of Light

I read a story about Michelangelo. Someone was praising him for his masterpiece “David.”

Michelangelo carved the “David” when he was twenty-six years old. This accomplishment would be remarkable in itself except he carved “The Pieta” when he was twenty-four! In the space of two years, Michelangelo sculpted two of the greatest masterpieces of all time.

Michelangelo attributed his success as a sculptor to his wet nurse. Not his mother, she was the wife of a stone mason.

Michelangelo remarked to his admirer that the David was already in the block of marble. All he did was to release him from his prison.

Bill hints at something similar in today’s video clip.

Bill begins today’s clip by answering the most important question every artist should ask before she begins.

“Where is the light coming from?”

Without proper lighting, a painting is flat and uninteresting. Uninteresting paintings languish in hallway closets never seeing the light of day. They remain hanging on gallery walls if the gallery owner allows the painting in the gallery at all.

Once you determine your light source, you can create highlights and shadows. These elements bring your painting to life.

In the second part of today’s video clip, Bill talks about the same idea suggested by Michelangelo.

Bill says that your painting is in the canvas waiting for you to release it. It is your job as an artist bring it out of the canvas.
