Points to Consider:

  • Buck’s painting is dry.
  • He coated his canvas with a thin coat of Magic Clear and then wiped most of it off with a paper towel.
  • He makes a glaze by mixing Alizarin Crimson and Magic Clear. (Walnut Oil if you prefer.)
  • Buck applies a very thin coat using horizontal strokes.
  • He wipes the glaze out where he wants to add paint later.  This helps the paint adhere to the canvas.
  • He adds more light back behind the top of the jug. He suggests that you can leave it the way it is if you want.
  • He adds a variety of colors and values to his jug because he wants it to appear aged.  If you prefer a new jug, that is ok too.
  • When adding highlights, keep in mind the surface of the object.  The oranges are porous and so the highlights appear bumpy, whereas, on the jug, made of glass, the highlights would look smooth.
  • Where two lines meet, soften the far one. This detaches the objects from each other and gives dimension.
We are still sorry the PDF file is blurry.  Since we film this with Buck through zoom, we are limited.  We can’t get good-quality photos along the way without interrupting Buck as he is painting.  So we have to pull the photos from the videos.  We are working to get better-quality videos.
Some find it helpful to print out the PDF with the photos before you start.  Others find it helpful to open it on a device.  Either way works.   It really just depends on what you prefer.
