Time-Tested Principles
Don’t make up new rules of art.
According to rabbinic tradition, Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon in his old age. Solomon writes, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”
If the rules of art were good enough for the Old Masters, they are good enough for you. Learn the techniques the Old Masters used and taught for centuries.
Teachers
Your teacher is essential to your success in learning to paint. There are four kinds of teachers. The best type of teacher is one who is both a master artist and a master teacher. Finding a teacher who possesses both of these properties is difficult. We have six of them on our site.
Paint
Bill believed that paint was so crucial that he created a unique paint for his students. As Bill said in many of his videos, “The paint will help you.” You can still buy Bill’s paint. Focus on learning techniques, not struggling with your paint.
Curriculum
If you want to learn anything you want to learn it well. A well-thought-out curriculum makes a difference. A course should feel comfortable so a complete beginner can learn in a relaxed, fun way. Beginners deserve the same quality training as advanced students.
Experts
An expert can teach you more in one day than you can learn on your own in a year. Techniques that only an expert would know.
Incremental and Progressive
It’s important when learning a new skill that you start with fundamentals. Build on them step by step. Each new painting should be more challenging than the last. We try to take on too much at one time. Make sure any course you take is incremental and progressive. Each new painting should build on the last. That way you learn new skills while strengthening old ones.
Feedback
Personal feedback is essential, so you know what you’re doing right as well as what needs improvement. Comments are better than critiques.
