Bill continues to lay in his foliage foundation layer – lots of dark. Highlighting will come later.

Watch Bill’s brush stroke at the :12 – :13 second mark. Notice the (very) slight sideways movement? Notice how that stroke adds just a tiny bit of detail to the tree? Bill is not just slapping paint on the canvas. He’s “molding” it. And he’s doing it with the same brush – no need to switch to a smaller brush to add those little details.

Also notice the :30 second mark where he “softens” the area that, only seconds before, was a blob of paint. Bill is varying his technique with the brush. With his first stroke he presses slightly up with the brush. The next three strokes he presses slightly down. The next stroke is slightly to the side (left). It looks like he is just dabbing on the canvas, but his strokes are not all the same! Notice how that area which, before, was just a blob of paint, now has detail and looks like foliage.

The fan brush is incredibly versatile (we haven’t even begun to show you all you can do with that brush). In our beginner series with Alexander Master Artist Tom Anderson, the fan brush is our “go-to” brush. More great stuff with the fan brush coming!
