Daily Tips Day 88 Bill

Bill shows us how to make different kinds of fruit

Bill continues on with his Still Life by adding some fruit. He does it so effortlessly because he has properly prepared his canvas and he is using thick paint. It is important to think about the surface of the object you are painting. Is it porous? Is it solid? Is it shiny? The brush you use will vary based on the answer to these questions.

Key Points To Consider:

  • Bill is still painting into wet paint.
  • He is painting into a thin coat of paint.
  • Grapefruit and oranges are porous and Bill creates them with a stiff bristle brush, the almighty 1″ Brush! He doesn’t soften the surface to keep the integrity of the structure.
  • He first adds the lights on the grapefruit and then adds the darks down below. Notice Bill taps the paint in deeper for the darker area. This is because he is preparing a space for the orange to overlap the grapefruit.
  • Bill is always thinking of where the light is coming from.
  • After he adds the orange we tap some of the orange color into the side of the grapefruit to create reflected light.
  • He uses the Fan Brush to make the apple because it has a different kind of surface. He also softens the surface to make it appear smooth and shiny.
  • Bill added Alizarin Crimson to the darker side of the apple.
  • Most importantly Bill teaches us to make it “tasty”. Make it look like something we would want to eat!

We hope you are becoming the artist you’ve always wanted to be. If not, let’s see how we can help!

Happy Painting!
