Daily Tips Day 597 Lowell

Lowell shows us how to make trees the easy way.

Today Lowell will begin to fill the vase! We’ve shown other videos of Lowell painting leaves but we feel like it is worthwhile to show them in different settings. The interesting thing here is that Lowell does NOT paint daisy leaves! He doesn’t because he said they are harder and he didn’t have time on his television show. Even though they aren’t Daisy Leaves, the arrangement is beautiful. Lowell shows us not to be afraid to go outside the box! I don’t know about you, but I didn’t notice they weren’t daisy leaves!

Key Points to Consider:

  • Lowell is painting on a wet canvas.
  • He originally used Magic Clear® to coat his canvas
  • The green he uses for the stems and grasses (and some leaves) is a mixture of Yellow Ochre, Phthalo Green and Ivory Black.
  • When he mixes his color he starts with the Yellow Ochre because it is a lighter color. He then adds the darker colors a little at a time until he achieves the shade he wants.
  • Lowell mixes the paint thoroughly before he loosens it with Magic Clear®.
  • He loosens it to an ink-like consistency so it flows well.
  • Lowell loads the Alexander Script Liner Brush with the loosened green paint to make the stems and grasses.
  • All strokes begin in the center of the vase and flow outward. He is careful to vary his strokes by changing the directions of his brush. He moves around the canvas and is always thinking of the “balance” of his arrangement.
  • He starts with more pressure on the canvas and lightens his touch as he comes to the tips of the grasses and stems. This gives the taper he is looking for rather than a blunt ending.
  • He avoids creating symmetry and forming straight lines.
  • He uses the Alexander Large Red Sable Brush to create the leaves.
  • If he wants the paint to be “extended” or looser, he dips his brush into Magic Clear®.
  • Notice how Lowell uses the corner of the brush and twists and pulls at the same time.
  • The lighter color of leaves is painted using a mixture of Phthalo Green and Titanium White.

We will get to the Daisies in a few days. Stay tuned!

We would love to see what you have on your easel. Please just reply to this email or any of them and attach a photo.

Happy Painting!
