Daily Tips Day 412 Lowell

Tis The Season! For Poinsettias!

There is nothing like a beautiful poinsettia to get us in the Holiday spirit! In this Video Tip Lowell will show you how to paint your very own poinsettia. Well, he will at least show you how to do the leaves or “bracts”! In a couple of days, he will be back to show you how to do the flowers or the red parts that are actually called “bracts”, or modified leaves.

Key Points to Consider:

  • Lowell uses an Alexander Red Sable Brush to get the fine lines he is looking for.
  • He uses Yellow Ochre and Titanium White (soft) with a touch of Permanent Red
  • He starts at the tip of the “bracts” and does overlapping strokes.
  • Lowell leaves a gap to create a unique shape.
  • He does NOT reload his brush until he begins another leave (bracts.)
  • When he creates the vein of the leaf he is actually removing paint as he brushes through the middle. This lets the background show through which creates the illusion of a center vein or ridge. He extends out past the leaf to create a tip.
  • Some of the leaves are similar to the leaves of the Roses that we showed you before.
  • It doesn’t matter if the color isn’t right. Just adjust the color by adding the color you would like to add and go right over the stroke. You can change it right on the canvas!
  • Lowell says that it is best to paint fast. Think about if you were to draw a straight line on a piece of paper. Wouldn’t it be straighter if you moved faster? Same idea here. Now that we have slowed Lowell down so we can see what he is doing, we can paint fast!

Happy Painting!
