Learn how to create a deep forest by using light and darks.
We are happy to bring you the next part of Diane’s painting called “Willamette River.” In this video, she creates a deep forest in both the light areas and the dark.
Key Points To Consider:
- Diane is painting on a wet background.
- The background paint is a little tacky but is very thin, which allows the thick paint to pull off the brush
- She loads her brush with a lot of paint.
- She mixes the color she wants on the palette.
- Diane paints leaves in the brightest part of the sky first.
- She reloads her brush often but never cleans it.
- Though she is making the forest dense, she leaves some of the background showing through to separate the leaves from each other. (Didn’t quite know how to say that!)
- You can see the tree leaves in the brush before she touches the canvas. The brush, properly loaded will work as a rubber stamp and leave the print of the brush.
- She adds leaves into the shadowy part of the forest but darkens the color first.
- She intersperses the light and the darker colors to make sure there is no definite line.
- Diane talks about putting herself in the painting. When you allow your creative power to come forth and you can feel yourself in the painting, it becomes more realistic.
- Diane says to let the brush and paint do the work! Don’t work too hard!
