Bill uses light and dark colors to create dimension in his dry riverbed.
There are several things to learn from today’s Video Tip.
Key Points To Consider:
- The background layer is thin and wet.
- Bill makes a couple of cacti using a small brush. He is aware of where the light is coming from and adds highlights to the right side.
- He uses dark paint to create the illusion of a deep crevice.
- While painting the inside of the crevice he uses vertical stokes.
- When he adds the highlights to the rim he uses horizontal strokes with his palette knife.
- His strokes always move in the direction of the land. If something appears flat, he moves in a flat direction.
- When Bill made the round cactus he uses a very dark reddish color and as he forms the plant he is mixing with the paint already on the canvas. This gives dimension by creating dark and light contrast.
Happy Painting!
