Getting the first layer right makes all the difference.
Bill Alexander created”Magic White®.” He was the first in modern times to put white paint on the canvas. He became tired of mixing all of his colors with white on the canvas and decided that it would be faster just to apply it to the canvas first and then mix his colors there.
Key Points To Consider:
- Bill’s original “Magic White®” formula has changed. We took the thinner out to make the product safer. We know Bill would approve. He didn’t like using thinner.
- Our new “Magic White®” is a little thicker but works the same way. It is a rich, beautiful white that can be used throughout your painting to thin your colors.
- He always thinks of where the light is coming from.
- He asks himself a series of questions. What time of day is it? Where is the light coming from? What season is it? All of these questions determine what colors he will use.
- Bill is using a very thin layer of paint for the background. He is tinting the canvas.
- He starts with a very thin coat of Phthalo Green to create a “happy green color.” He then adds Phthalo Blue beginning at the top of the canvas and then works down into the green.
- Bill creates the illusion of distance at the horizon by adding Alizarin Crimson into the green. When the two colors mixed it created a greyed tone.
- He plans to create a desert scene.
- Stay tuned for more!
Happy Painting!
