Daily Tips Day 176 Bill

“Water is a funny animal.” Bill Alexander

Today Bill continues his painting called “Mountain Water Runoff.” He adds the distant trees.

Key Points To Consider:

  • He slams Titanium White into the base of the trees to create a misty area using the fan brush
  • Once he puts the first layer on he goes for Magic White because a thinner paint sticks to thicker paint.
  • He creates churning water. Notice how much, or how little he bends the bristles in the fan brush as he lays the paint on.
  • He keeps the lightest colors on top where the light would hit.
  • He adds blue on the lower area to create depth.
  • We no longer use thinner to clean our brushes or thin our paint. Though Bill shows it here. If he was still painting he wouldn’t be using it either.
  • The water is flowing over rocks that Bill imagines are there
  • As he adds the highlights he barely bends the bristles because he wants the white paint to sit on top of the existing layer of paint, rather than mixing with it
  • Bill constantly changes the angle and direction of the fan brush to create water movement.
  • He allows the dark to show through in places to create form.

Happy Painting!
