The beauty of oils!

It’s interesting how many folks fear oil paints. Oil paints are the most forgiving of all painting mediums. That may explain why master artists going back to Leonardo da Vinci (and perhaps further) chose to paint exclusively in oils. Alexander Master Artist Tom Anderson shares some ideas on the advantages of oil painting.

I enjoy oil painting but found that I was having breathing issues at times. I paint in a carport with plenty of ventilation. Odourless thinners are in many cases turps based with little or no smell. But they still contain all the vapours that effect your lungs. Besides turps is a known carcinogen. So I switched to Spike Oil as my thinner and mix it 50% with Stand Oil. This gives a very relaxing medium to use. It smells slightly of camphor and lavender. Spike Oil has 4x the dissolving power of turps without any of the adverse effects of turps. The mix only requires a drop or two to make your oil paint more liquid and I have used it as a replacement for the clear underpainting when painting wet in wet as per Bill Alexanders method. I have also found that the oil paint dries quicker with the Stand oil /Spike Oil mix.
