…art is a noble work and it helps make life worthwhile. — Bill Alexander

Today’s quote comes from Bill’s autobiography. Bill relates how a restaurant owner wanted some of Bill’s paintings to hang on the walls of his restaurant. The restaurant owner didn’t want to pay for them. He figured Bill should be grateful to him that he was allowing Bill to display his work.

We wrote about this kind of mentality in a recent article. Bill stood his ground and refused the “offer” because he believed in his art and himself. During the height of his celebrity, he never pretended to be anyone but himself and that endeared him to his fans. Be true to your beliefs – stand your ground!

Some people do not see art as a job but a hobby. I have had people tell me I should be happy for the exposure. It is expensive to paint and I work hard to sell my work. I love it but it is my job. Stop trying to make me feel grateful that you want me to give you a painting.

I agree! I’m trying to find my own space to paint in our home. The front door open gives proper light. But my husband coming and going is a huge interruption. He suggested the basement. I want a separate place of my own free from phone or raids in the kitchen for next meal. He is finally understanding that my need to paint is more than a hobby!
I’m in a Gallery and was told if I want to be featured I needed to give them more paintings. They have three already. I’ve donated two that have sold. I let them have commission on a painting they had no part of. I did so as a donation to the Gallery. I painted live twice for free and was a part of refurbishing the local community Christmas scene. Which was a hour and a half drive one way four times.. If you go to their Web site I’m not mentioned. I did pay and have a contract with the Gallery.
Is this how it is? I’m upset that they don’t respect me as a professional. While on one live painting for the Gallery a woman asked if I teach. The Gallery director stepped in and said that would be Chuck and told her when the next class would be.
There I feel better. Venting was needed. Thanks.
